BDBF BDBF Attorneys Sing Out — Our Favorite Holiday Songs

Last year, BDBF attorneys revealed our favorite holiday movies. It sparked a lot of debate among our readers! So on an even more hot-button subject, this year we’ll reveal our favorite holiday songs!

Just in case my rabbi is reading this, I feel like I have to give a plug for Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah Song. But in reality, it’s a tie between two very different songs. As a kid, I had A Chipmunk Christmas on tape and used to listen to Chipmunk Christmas Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) over and over and over (I have even taught my daughter to love it). But for a non-cartoon Christmas song, I have to go with Mariah Carey’s O Holy Night. Nobody should be able to switch octaves like that. It’s criminal.

My favorite Christmas song is another Mariah Carey classic – All I want Tor Christmas Is You. But I also love Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree because it was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. (Editor’s Note – it’s also the soundtrack to one of the best scenes in one of the best Christmas movies ever).

Anything from Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. When I hear that, or see it on TV, I’m instantly transported to a cozy family Christmas. But if I have to pick one song, it would be Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas”. The lyrics aren’t terribly uplifting, but it has a beautiful melody.

Dan Shaivitz

My guilty admission is I love holiday music (up to a certain point – at least wait until after Thanksgiving). In high school, one of the coolest things we did in choir every year was go caroling in a local hospital. Our best and my favorite song was Handel’s Hallelujah, Amen (from “Judas Maccabaeus”). That being said, my slightly more modern favorites are The Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping and Wham!’s Last Christmas which are pretty awesome toe-tappers. Finally, I want to give a Ho-Ho-Honorable Mention award to Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis and only in part to acknowledge that it was in Die Hard which, of course, is a Christmas movie.

Readers, tell us about your favorite Christmas song!
