April is sandwiched between two holidays of international origin which have been fully co-opted by America’s alcoholic beverage industry.
We’re talking about St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, of course!
Which of these two holidays do BDBF attorneys prefer? Read on to find out!
Although I prefer margaritas more than Guinness, I still have to go with St. Patrick’s Day. My family has Irish roots, so I always enjoyed getting to tell everyone that I was Irish for the day! When I ran track in high school, my friends and I would run to the local McDonalds to get a Shamrock Shake on St. Patrick’s Day too (the run back to school was always much slower than the run to McDonalds).
This is a surprisingly close call. On food and drink, I’ll take a margarita and guac any day over a Guinness and corned beef. But St. Patrick’s Day often coincides with my real favorite spring holiday, the NCAA basketball tournament (a/k/a March Madness). In fact, this year St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Friday AND it was the second day of March Madness, featuring 32 nonstop games from 12 noon to 12 midnight. So college basketball and a Guinness (or two)? And an excuse to work a half day on a Friday?!?! The nod goes to St. Patrick’s Day.
I prefer a nice margarita on a warm spring day over a green beer. The pick is easy. Cinco de Mayo.
Sadly, I know very little about both holidays. For instance, only as a result of recent online searching did I recently learn about Mexico’s famed General Ignacio Zaragoza (or the fact that the holiday actually commemorates victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 and NOT Mexican independence, which is actually celebrated September 16). I also was blissfully ignorant of the terrible origin story of St. Patrick (who was kidnapped as a teenager and enslaved). What I DO know is that I love frozen adult beverages including the Margarita (though, in truth, I prefer a Pina Colada or some mix of Pina Colada and fruity Daquiri). Few things are more relaxing to me than sipping a booze-slushy on a sunny and beautiful 5th day of May. The pick – Cinco de Mayo.
